This was my second piece, and created the direction for this group of paintings.
-I began this painting many years before, but had never finished it. The idea that the dragon is magically tied to the elements of fire, water, earth and air, made me think of one that was made of the land, instead of just a mystical part of it.
I rediscovered it while working on 'Dragon The First', noting that it was the same canvas-type, size and shape.
I determined then to complete this, and make my two Dragons a pair and a set.
(By this point, my thoughts were also turning to the Green Man, which became the third painting in this series.)
Regarding Dragons:
Dragons in the Western world embody humankind's potential,
mixed with all the forces in life that keep us from our goals.
They are a metaphor for the challenge of life, in its relentless demands on our time and inner resources.
-I like to think that each of us has a personal, metaphoric Dragon to face and overcome, to succeed in our lives. To overcome its power over us, we must know who we are.
I like to think of both of my Dragons as Gate-Keepers to my series, flanking them if they were on display.
-My hardy Ranger in this piece, (much like me, many times in life), thinks he is prepared,
but simply has NO idea, ha!

NOTE: As with Dragon the First, my comments on the video below reflect my process at the time. (As this was my second piece, and the idea of a series was starting to form at this time.:)
